HARAR LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE WATER MANAGEMENT PROJECT WITH NEDAMCO AFRICA: A NEW ERA OF SUSTAINABILITY AND TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT

MARCH 17TH 2024 | NEDAMCO AFRICA PRESS CENTER

Today, the Harari Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (HRWSA) and Nedamco Africa announced the start of their collaborative “Catchment-City-Waste Water Management” (CCW) project for Harar. This success-based partnership underscores Harar’s commitment to environmental innovation, its readiness to adopt advanced technologies for a better future.

The CCW solution, developed by Nedamco Africa and its partners, uses an integrated technology platform to tackle water loss and inefficiency, issues common in rapidly urbanizing areas like Harar. It employs digital twin technology, AI/ML, and satellite imagery for a comprehensive overview of water infrastructure, enabling the detection of leakages and predicting climate impacts. This initiative is aimed at increasing water access and quality for Harar’s residents, ensuring significant improvements in their quality of life through better water management. Harar is often referred to as the “fourth holy city of Islam”. The city, known for its unique heritage, including the famous Jugol, the fortified historic town and a UNESCO World Heritage site, further reinforces the city’s commitment to preserving its cultural and historical significance while embracing modern technological solutions for sustainable development.

Leveraging Technology for Transparent Water Management and Innovative Financing – This project is a stride forward in sustainable climate finance, merging modern technology with detailed data analysis for the accurate assessment of environmental benefits from water conservation. Nedamco Africa utilizes the latest tools, including AI, machine learning, satellite imagery, and blockchain technology, for real-time tracking of water management progress. This approach not only allows for verifiable and transparent data but also supports the issuance of water certificates based on the Volumetric Water Benefits Accounting 2.0 methodology. These certificates validate the improvements in water management and contribute towards sustainable water use globally.

Moreover, the initiative serves as a prime example of the effectiveness of public-private partnerships, combining governmental and private sector resources with international climate finance to promote a green economy. By aligning with global sustainability goals, particularly SDG6, the project facilitates new investment opportunities in Harar’s water infrastructure and community support, driving forward environmental sustainability and innovation.
