CELEBRATING THE TRANSFORMATIVE MICROSOFT AND NEDAMCO AFRICA PARTNERSHIP

As recently posted by Anke den Ouden, CEO of Microsoft Netherlands, on LinkedIn, the partnership between Microsoft and Nedamco Africa shows what’s possible when innovation meets collaboration. Over the past three years, we’ve worked together to build the National Sustainability Command Centre (NSCC)—a Digital Twin platform that helps African governments and organizations act on climate risks in real time using data-driven insights. The platform was designed by Microsoft and is now being deployed locally in close cooperation with students from the Nedamco Academy.

A Continent Under Pressure

Africa is facing growing climate challenges that are putting its people, environment, and economies at risk:

Water Scarcity:3 billion people affected; 400 million without clean water access.
Biodiversity Loss: Wildlife populations have dropped 76%, with 30,000 species under threat.
Rising Temperatures: Projected to rise by up to 4°C by 2100, worsening health and disease issues.
Agricultural Impact: Crop yields could fall by 20–50% by 2050, hitting food security hard.
Funding Gaps: Less than 10% of the $2.8 trillion in needed climate funding is reaching Africa.

Our Joint Impact

Thanks to Microsoft’s support, the NSCC is starting to make a difference:

Disaster Risk Prediction: Using GenAI to simulate floods, wildfires, and landslides.
AI-Driven Interventions: Helping governments better prepare for climate disasters.
Food Security Forecasting: Boosting crop yield predictions in Ethiopia.
Environmental Credits: Enabling the creation of verifiable carbon and water credits to attract climate finance.

The platform is now implemented across Ethiopia and will soon launch in Rwanda and beyond—expanding its impact across Africa.
